  Listening to slow jams

  AOL not loading
  Cuz Papa on the phone
  Yeah
  I fire up my Walkman
  And pass the night alone

  Growing up
I was listening to slow jams
Little kid with a dream of a slow dance
Caught up in a 90s romance
I be listening to slow jams

  Growing up
I was listening to slow jams
Little kid with a dream of a slow dance
Caught up in a 90s romance
I be listening to slow jams
  Like

  Earbud under my sleeve
  Grooving during class
I stole it off of Napster
  Uh
But now my computer language has changed into Russian
  Oh no

  Growing up
I was listening to slow jams
Little kid with a dream of a slow dance
Caught up in a 90s romance
I be listening to slow jams

  Growing up
I was listening to slow jams
Little kid with a dream of a slow dance
Caught up in a 90s romance
I be listening to slow jams
  Like

  Ay ay

  Growing up
  Listening to slow jams
  Little kid
  With a dream of romance

Track eight on [*Big Hug*](/albums/big-hug/), Luke solo, October 2021. The [album essay](/albums/big-hug/) files the Napster jokes alongside Heffalumps and California mythology as the same cartoon shell doing post-pandemic softening. This is the millennial-childhood track: pre-broadband loneliness drawn in a single scene, *AOL not loading cuz Papa on the phone*, so you fire up the Walkman and *pass the night alone*. Romance imagined in mono. The chorus loops the fantasy, a *little kid with a dream of a slow dance, caught up in a 90s romance*, R&B as a time machine to a decade you barely lived.

The title pays off in the bridge: *I stole it off of Napster... but now my computer language has changed into Russian, oh no.* Classic Napster malware gag, the `.wav` of the filename made literal, secret music delivered as a virus. The outro strips back to the same wound, simpler than the chorus. **egoFM:** [*Slow Jam.wav*](/songs/slow-jam-wav-stolen-off-of-napster/) appears in the published tracklist for Scoobert's hosted [**Privataudienz**](https://www.egofm.de/radiowelt/die-egofm-privataudienz) guest hour on Munich radio (~25 min [online cut](https://www.egofm.de/content/files/mediathek/egofm-privataudienz-scoobert-doobert-cut-fur-online.mp3)). Same Big Hug register as [*Can't Imagine Feeling Better*](/songs/cant-imagine-feeling-better/), earnest feeling in joke packaging, and the opposite technology era from [*All My Friends Live on the Internet*](/songs/all-my-friends-live-on-the-internet/) on *KŌAN*. Sits after [*Heffalumps and Woozles*](/songs/heffalumps-and-woozles/) and before [*If I Could Only*](/songs/if-i-could-only/).
