Remember when I took you on a
  road
  trip
  ,
Took you out to see the honest side of me.
We got high and sat around the fire,
Telling jokes and picking names out for our future kids.
  All of this,
  Does it really matter?
  All of this,
  D
  oesn't really matter.
  Anyway.

Do you recall when you and I just moved in,
  Honestly
  ,
  w
e sank our teeth into each other's throats.
  But
then your family asked when we'd get married,
  Honey almost,
  Dropped down; genuflecting knee.
  All
  of this,
  Does it rea
  lly matter?
  All of this,
  It doesn't really matter.
  Anyway.

  Someday your memories will fade,
And I'll be too far away
  to remind you
  like I used to.
  Someday I won't deserve a glance,
When I pass you on the corner.
  like I hope to
  to remind you.

  About
  that time
  When we went on a
  road
  trip
  ,
Back when you could see the honest side of me.
  Maybe
  I'll get high
  and build a
  pyre
  ,
  Gather up the ashes;
Prove that we were ever here
  .

  All
  of this,
  Does it
  really matter?
  All of this,
  Doesn't
  really matter.
  Anyway.

Track eleven on [*Little Homes*](/albums/little-homes-fein/) (**May 31, 2016**), after [*Don't You*](/songs/dont-you/). Walton/Woodward co-write. A relationship told as evidence-gathering, undercut at every turn by the suspicion that none of it counts.

The memories are specific and tender: a road trip out *to see the honest side of me*, a fire, *picking names out for our future kids*; later, moving in and sinking *our teeth into each other's throats* before a family asks when the marriage is coming. Each scene lands on the same shrug, *all of this, doesn't really matter. Anyway.* The bridge turns that defense into real fear of estrangement, *someday I won't deserve a glance when I pass you on the corner*, and the last verse answers it with a strange, desperate gesture: *maybe I'll get high and build a pyre, gather up the ashes, prove that we were ever here.* The ashes are the point. When memory fails, the narrator wants physical proof the home existed at all.

Pairs with [*Twenty-Three*](/songs/twenty-three/) and [*Blanket*](/songs/blanket/). Where [*#Grownupz*](/songs/grownupz/) won't grow up, this one documents intimacy precisely because it might not count later. Leads into [*Lonely People*](/songs/lonely-people/).
