I pick the story back up there, starting with Buddy Holly, who I frame as rock's first real innovator-songwriter, someone who broke from what came before rather than repeating it. From there I trace the detours: Richie Valens folding Mexican traditional folk music into rock on "La Bamba," The Big Bopper working the comedy angle as a radio DJ turned musician who claimed to be using the term "music video" before anyone else, and Dick Dale, the son of a Lebanese immigrant, bringing Middle Eastern influence and new guitar technology together to invent surf rock. The through-line is that rock's crisis years didn't kill it, they diversified it: every culture that touched the genre left something behind, and that's still true of the rock being made now.
