The Beatles breaking up is a mic drop, the end of rock's second wave, the one that runs from early rock and blues through the psychedelic era. I get into why that ending forced the genre to turn inward: when the band everyone measured themselves against was gone, the next wave had to change on its own terms instead of reacting to one. That change runs through the shift from AM to FM radio, which I compare to the jump from black and white to color: more room, more fidelity, and space for the longer, stranger songs that became progressive rock. I connect that directly to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, an album grappling with mental illness as much as it's building a sound, and to the bands that carried the progressive label forward from there. FM radio, pirate radio, stereo, and the synthesizer all opened channels right as The Beatles closed one. Rock didn't end, it just needed a new frequency to grow into.
