- Written music has been around for a thousand years, and I'm reading a lot of music history books lately asking the same question: how did we end up making the music we're making? That's the spine of this episode. I get into how access to music from other cultures can fundamentally change how you hear your own, and why a perfectly notated jazz chart would still trip up a baroque musician who has never heard the style. Beethoven is the hinge point: I break down how he had all the technical chops of Mozart but pushed music toward the individual, toward Romanticism, in a way that still shapes how composers think about personal expression today. I close on where that leaves us now: we have tools Beethoven couldn't have imagined, and the job is to take what came before and push past it, not repeat it.
